Dances of Universal Peace
Safiya Slack event coordinator of Rising Tide
rtievents@gmail.com

The Dances of Universal Peace were founded in the early 1970's by American born Sufi Master, Samuel Lewis after a lifetime of study with great beings and world travel. Often referred to as 'moving meditation' they are circle dances with folk-dance type movements done while chanting sacred phrases from all the world's traditions. For instance you might have a dance changing partners while singing "Shalom Aleichem" in Hebrew or an upbeat circle dance singing the Hindu phrase "Sri Ram Jai Ram". All dances are taught patiently on the spot by certified leaders. It offers spiritual experience in a joyful social setting.

The Dances of Universal Peace are practiced in over 60 countries around the world.

ABOUT CAPOEIRA (kah-po-WAY-da)
Capoeira took its shape in the bubbling cauldron of Brazil. Its roots trace
from the African peoples enslaved there dating from the early 1500's. Its own evolution is testimony to the creative adaptability and will to survive of its people and culture. Still truly evolving, Capoeira has been spreading worldwide in recent decades. It provides a rare modern format to bring together our best human resources - music, vigorous physical interaction, playfulness, community structure, and creativity - to develop problem solving capabilities, confidence, and respectfulness in the 'un-balance-ing' conditions that we are often in. Much more than a “martial art”, capoeira is an art-of-life.

Capoeira is played in a circle (“roda”) of people that includes several members playing various percussion instruments. Driven by soulful songs and rhythms of diverse intensity, two capoeirstas at a time engage in a spirited dialogue of body and wit. Nonstop attacks, defenses, and counterattacks suggest a fight while the mood is generally playful. The strategies rely on trickery as much as agility, speed and strength. Ritual elements and personal expression are infused throughout the uninterrupted pulse of the roda.

The batizado is the feature event of a full reunion weekend where we welcome our newer students and recognize our existing ones! The batizado is an event where students receive their cords. They must train hard and know the requirements for the cord they are receiving and are tested on their knowledge before the big day. The capoeirsta must play one or many Mestres, and as a tradition they are to be taken down. The batizado is a celebration not a competiton and the Mestres and teachers are there to celebrate with everyone.

“The career of the capoeirsta begins with the batizado. From the first jogo to the point of fully understanding the art, students will spend many years constantly probing and training their weaknesses, facing the treacheries of life with open eyes. During this time, they will be physically, mentally and spiritually challenged as they strive toward a well-rounded study of the art.”

History of Volta Ao Mundo
In 1996, Mestre Rony moved to Western Florida from California where he was giving Capoeira classes with Contra-Mestre Amunka. Mestre Rony soon started his own Capoeira Group, Volta Ao Mundo, while living in St. Petersburg, Florida. Where he had his first small school. In 1999, he moved Volta Ao Mundo to Sarasota, Florida; he was giving classes in three different locations, and was anxious to find a permanent location. Within a year he found a 3000 sq. ft. facility that he could teach and train Capoeira. In 2002, Volta ao Mundo was moved to the location we train in today, on the corner of Bee Ridge Road and Tuttle Ave. To date, Volta Ao Mundo has three academies, including locations in Tampa, FL with Professor Girino, and Springfield, IL.

World Collision with guest Jeremy Lembo
Hypnotic, engaging world fusion music with sitar, classical guitar, hammered dulcimer, and heavy trance bass and percussion-all organic and played by a human.

World Collision is a new world music fusion project of former Neurotica guitarist Shawn Bowen. This music is the start of a journey way off the beaten path for him, hence the album title "Embark". Shawn's former band was named in Rolling Stone magazine as being "one of the 10 best bands of Ozzfest 2002", but there is no distortion or vocals whatsoever on Embark. World Collision features the sounds of classical guitar, hammered dulcimer, sitar, tanpura, harmonium, bass guitar, native american flute, bamboo saxaphone, and various drums and percussion including djembe, djun djuns, frame drum, udu, and tabla. This album also has some nature sounds including a summer rain during "Skywater", and the song "Marguerite's bamboo" is an 8 minute recording of a huge bamboo archway blowing and creaking in the wind at 3am accompanied by tabla and a bamboo saxaphone solo.

The only guest on this album is Jeremy Lembo of the group "Didg Revolution" playing didgeridoo on the track "...A desert at night". This music is very soothing, medatative, and engaging, great for headphones, massages, and sex...

Jeremy Lembo came to Florida in 1996 from the Hudson River Valley of upstate New York. Jeremy's many years of formal music training shaped and honed his skills as a musician, and set him up perfectly for playing the didgeridoo. Jeremy was introduced to the didg while watching a PBS Special at age 3. He rediscovered this interest in 1998 while traveling in South America, when he heard a fellow traveler playing this incredible instrument on the streets of Cusco, Peru. Upon returning to the U.S. he purchased his first didg, and has been playing ever since. He soon began crafting and selling his own line of didgeridoos, made from an assortment of materials. Jeremy considers the didgeridoo to be a reflection of one's soul, and by listening to his quick rhythms you get a glimpse inside of his.

Jeremy is a founding member of Didg Revolution and Dragon Fly Rhythms.
